As Nepal was struck by a massive earthquake recently, popular instant messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) app Viber offers earthquake victims free international calls from Nepal. According to the latest reports, Viber has temporarily switched off the billing for its Viber Out feature so people in Nepal could make free overseas calls through this application.
“In response to the earthquake in Nepal we have switched off Viber Out billing so Nepalese users can call any destination for free. We hope this will prove helpful to Nepalese users during this difficult time,” Viber announced through Facebook. The feature enables Viber users to make calls to non-Viber numbers as well.
Besides allowing its Nepalese users to call landline numbers for free, the popular app is also working on allowing Viber Out calls to Nepal. This will allow free calls to Nepalese mobile and landline numbers.
The earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude struck Nepal on Saturday (25 April), killing more than three thousand people and injuring many more. As the country’s communication lines have been disconnected during the earthquake, Viber’s calling feature will give people a chance to contact their loved ones.
