Virtusa Organizes Hackathon “App-Tite” Across 16 Cities

Virtusa conducted a Hackathon called the ‘App-Tite’ , Virtusa_Logo_It Voicespanning across 16 cities which included Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Noida, Hyderabad to name a few. 33 reputed institutes participated from the Andhra Pradesh, 28 from Tamil Nadu, 9 from Maharashtra, 7 from Karnataka and 5 from Delhi/NCR region.

The competition was launched on the 30thof August with 350 teams from 88 colleges participating. These teams brainstormed and submitted 196 ideas around Healthcare, social issues and education, traffic management systems and women safety issues.

The top 4 teams were awarded prizes and various goodies from Virtusa. The winning team from HKBK College of Engg, Bangalore, also an all-women team, was awarded cash prizes of Rs. 25,000 and job offers at Virtusa. Their award winning solution aimed at ending long billing queues at shopping malls, allowing shoppers to directly scan the products and make payments through their wallets. The first runner-up team from MLR IT, Hyderabad was awarded Rs 20,000 and job offers at Virtusa. Their solution aimed at automating street lights. Their solution used light sensors embedded in bulbs to automate the lights, the main aim being to save electricity and climate.

Speaking about the success of the event, Dr. Murali Padmanabhan, Vice President & Global Head of Learning & Leadership development at Virtusa says, “With the pool of engineering talent increased, companies have moved from knowledge testing to skill testing. Hackathons are a great fun way to demarcate the best from the rest. Companies now want to put their employees directly to task, hence competitions such as these help to bring out the best coders and test a student’s ability to use current technology to solve real business and social problems”. Owing to the overwhelming success of the event, the Hackathon is now going to be yearly feature in Virtusa’s recruitment calendar.
