WhatsApp Can Now Be Your Default Calling and Messaging App on iPhone

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows iPhone users to set it as their default app for making calls and sending messages, This update, included in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS (version 25.8.10.74) available via TestFlight, enables select beta testers to use WhatsApp as their primary communication app on iPhones.

This change is made possible by Apple’s recent decision to let users select default apps for different functions like messaging, calling, email, and web browsing. With iOS 18.2, iPhone users are no longer restricted to using Apple’s built-in Phone and Messages apps—they can now choose alternatives like WhatsApp.

What Happens When You Set WhatsApp as the Default App?

Once WhatsApp is designated as your default calling and messaging app:

  • Calls and messages will go through WhatsApp automatically when tapping a contact’s number from your address book or another app.

  • No need to manually switch between apps, streamlining communication.

  • Greater convenience for WhatsApp users, allowing them to manage all calls and texts from a single platform.

For millions of users who rely on WhatsApp for personal and business communication, this feature brings several benefits:

  • Time-saving: Eliminates the hassle of switching between multiple apps.

  • Enhanced privacy: WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption keeps calls and messages secure.

  • Free international calls: Unlike traditional phone calls, WhatsApp uses the internet, reducing costs.

  • Seamless multimedia sharing: Users can easily send images, videos, and documents without leaving the app.

Currently, only a limited number of beta testers have access to this feature, but a wider rollout is expected soon. If you’re part of WhatsApp’s TestFlight beta program, you might already see the option in your settings.

WhatsApp has been gradually expanding its calling capabilities, including the addition of an in-app dialer last year. This allowed users to manually enter phone numbers and check if they were on WhatsApp before making a call. Now, by enabling default app functionality, WhatsApp is further challenging Apple’s native communication apps.

Although this feature is still in beta, a stable release is anticipated in the near future. There’s no word yet on whether Android users will receive a similar update, but WhatsApp’s latest move marks a significant step toward redefining how users make calls and send messages on iPhones.
