WhatsApp may share this data about you with Facebook, reveals new leaked Terms of Service
WhatsApp is currently sitting on billions of monthly active users and occupies a large share in the messaging app market globally. Nearly everyone knows that the platform is owned by Facebook. This has led to several speculations in the past that WhatsApp may be sharing user information with Facebook. Although this has not yet been confirmed, a new report coming from WABetainfo website adds some weight to those claims.
The website that tracks new feature changes and more on WhatsApp across platforms claims to have access to the company’s new Terms of Services. The updated ToS suggests that WhatsApp may share users’ personal data with ‘Facebook Companies’. However, it adds that this will happen only when the user allows them to share their personal data. “When we share your personal information with other Facebook Companies, it will only be used to provide services to WhatsApp on our behalf in accordance with our instructions and terms or to help ensure the safety, security, and integrity of WhatsApp and other Facebook Company Products. Nothing you share on WhatsApp, including your phone number, will be shown on Facebook or any of the Facebook Company Products, unless you choose to show it,” says the purported Terms of Service.
According to the ToS revealed by the website, WhatsApp uses Facebook Companies to “understand how our features are performing so we can provide an innovative experience to you.” – Information you provide when you use WhatsApp, like your profile name and phone number
– Information about how you use WhatsApp, like the date you registered your account, when you last used our Services, the types and frequency of features you use, which businesses you message with, and which business messages, business directory listings [, and sponsored content/ads] you interact with
– Information from your device and app, like its operating system, app version, location, and identifiers (like device identifiers and the FB Family ID).
