Microsoft’s new Windows Phone devices may feature Canon’s imaging technology following a new patent agreement between the two companies.
Microsoft and Canon have signed a new patent cross-licensing deal under which they’ll gain licenses to each other’s patent portfolios.
According to a press statement from Microsoft, the agreement covers a wide range of products and services from both companies, including digital imaging and mobile consumer products. However, product and financial details related to the agreement have not been disclosed.
Post the agreement, it is possible that Microsoft uses Canon’s imaging technology in its Windows Phone powered smartphone devices.
“This collaborative approach with Canon allows us to deliver inventive technologies that benefit consumers around the world,” said Nick Psyhogeos, general manager, associate general counsel, IP Licensing of the Innovation and Intellectual Property Group at Microsoft. “Microsoft believes cooperative licensing is an effective way to accelerate innovation while reducing patent disputes.”
Nokia’s PureView devices are recognised for their advanced imaging capabilities. Microsoft could perhaps be looking at launching new imaging focused devices combining Nokia and Canon’s expertise in optics.
“This agreement is a natural extension of our longstanding relationship with Microsoft and commitment to developing innovative technologies,” said Hideki Sanatake, senior general manager, Corporate Intellectual Property & Legal Headquarters of Canon.
