Kanpur Police has designed a new SOS mobile app to help victims of crime against women so that emergency assistance can be provided by the family members as well as police.
Women and girls’ safety is a massive concern in modern India but advanced technology can be of great help to address this issue. A new mobile app, SOS, will be launched soon by the Kanpur police, which is designed to help losses send an immediate alert to family members and the police control room.
Kanpur SSP, K S Emanuel, said that the SOS app is meant to cut down the numbers of crimes against women, which also include eve-teasing. The SSP also said, “We have tested it to decide whether the emergency SMS or voice messages were being delivered to the emergency number on time and it remained successful. We will launch it soon.”
Another company, Extentia, also created a similar app for Android phones and it also bagged the 2014 South West India Manthan award for e-Women & Empowerment. Earlier in March, BJP launched a Raksha app for the same issue. It has a one-press alert button which can alert others when someone is facing some not needed situation. Prior to that, a Microsoft Guardian tool was also released in Windows phones addressing the same concern.
The new SOS app, created by Kanpur police, may be available on Android phones only, at least for the time being. But it’s expected that this app will soon roll out for iOS phones too in near future. The key features of this app are:
1. Sends emergency alert to police
2. Sends SOS to friends and relatives
3. Police computers are integrated with this app
4. Real time tracking through GPS in enabled
