Since its launch in 2022, ChatGPT, an AI model developed by OpenAI with support from Microsoft, has gained significant popularity. This technology has been lauded for its ability to reduce human workload, but it has also faced criticism for its potential misuse by criminals. Recently, this AI technology played a crucial role in helping the police apprehend individuals involved in fraudulent activities during a government exam.
The Uttar Pradesh Police used an advanced AI-based face recognition software to identify and arrest 87 candidates suspected of cheating in a government recruitment exam. These candidates were found to have employed unfair means during the exam, which took place at various centers across the state. The highest number of suspects, 11 in total, were apprehended in Lucknow, while 12 were nabbed in Noida and Ghaziabad districts near Delhi.
The individuals who were arrested were part of an alleged “solvers” gang, acting as dummy candidates. They fraudulently appeared for the exam conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC) to recruit Gram Vikas Adhikari (Village Development Officers) using unfair methods.
Police officials disclosed that the accused members of the gang were apprehended from different parts of the state, including Aligarh, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Mirzapur, Agra, and Jhansi, among others. Legal action will be taken against them in their respective districts, as FIRs have already been filed charging them with cheating, forgery, and using unfair means during state-held public examinations.
The successful identification and arrest of these individuals became possible through the use of advanced face recognition software powered by artificial intelligence. The UPSSSC, in collaboration with the Special Task Force and local police administrations, employed this technology to track down and apprehend the 87 solvers, including one female.
The UPSSSC took stringent measures to maintain the integrity of the exam, closely monitoring the process with live streaming of all exam-related activities at every center.
