Android is taking digital privacy seriously with its new Unknown Tracker Alerts feature, which is rolling out to users with Android 6.0 and later versions. These alerts will notify users if an unknown Bluetooth tracker, disconnected from its owner, is detected moving with them. Initially compatible with Apple AirTags, the feature will expand to other tracking tags in the future. The notification provides information about the tracker and displays its journey with the user on a map. Users can choose to play a sound to locate the tracker without alerting the owner for added security.
Upon receiving an alert, users can get more information about the unknown tracker and take appropriate action. Bringing the device closer to the phone might reveal the tracker’s serial number or owner’s details. The feature also guides users on how to disable the Bluetooth tracker entirely, preventing further location updates for the owner.
In addition to waiting for alerts, Android users can proactively scan for trackers separated from their owners using the manual scan feature. A simple procedure through the settings will provide a list of nearby trackers within seconds.
The Unknown Tracker Alerts demonstrate Android’s commitment to user safety through collaboration with users, privacy groups, and device manufacturers. The ‘Find My Device’ network rollout has been temporarily held until Apple implements adequate protections for iOS. Once launched, this network will help locate missing belongings using third-party Bluetooth tracker tags.
