Apple’s original 12-inch MacBook now obsolete

The first-generation 12-inch MacBook, which was released in March 2015, has now been deemed obsolete by Apple. This means that users can no longer receive repair or service for this model at Apple Stores or Apple Authorized Service Providers.

The 12-inch MacBook was known for its slim design and weighed less than a kilogram. It featured a wedge shape design and had a starting price of Rs 99,000 in India. The standard specifications included a 1.1GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor, integrated Intel HD 5300 graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD.

Notably, the 12-inch MacBook was the first MacBook to introduce the butterfly switch keyboard design. However, this design faced numerous issues and frequent failures, leading to complaints and lawsuits. As a result, Apple eventually phased out the butterfly keyboard from its entire MacBook lineup.

Although the first-generation 12-inch MacBook may no longer receive repair services, it may still qualify for an extended battery-only repair period that lasts up to 10 years from the date of the product’s last distribution for sale, which means until 2026.

According to Apple’s policy, a product is considered obsolete seven years after its discontinuation. The original 12-inch MacBook was replaced by the second-generation model in 2016, which is now also classified as vintage.

In addition to the MacBook, Apple has classified the stainless steel models of the Apple Watch Series 2 as vintage, joining the previously classified aluminum Series 2 models.
