Delhi-based Champion Computers is all set to start the manufacturing of feature phones starting this month. Moving forward, it also plans to produce ‘Champion’ brand of smartphones and tablets in the second phase of expansion.
Looking at the government thrust to promote local manufacturing in India, this importer-turned-phone-manufacturer wants to avail the government incentives being given to local manufacturers. The company believes this is the right time to diversify and take advantage of the current growth in market for the feature phones and smartphones.
Elaborating further on the manufacturing plans, Kapil Wadhwa, MD of Champion Computers said, “We have had our facility in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh for the last 8 years. Earlier we were producing desktops and laptops, which we stopped six months ago. Now we have decided to use that facility to produce mobiles. We are scaling up our production line and will produce close to one lakh units of feature phone in a month. We plan to ramp it up to 2 lakh units by end of this year.”
The company will start the production in June and by the month of July, the feature phones will be ready for sale in the open market through its partners network.
Currently, Champion has two lines of business, IT and Mobility. Since the company has been in the IT trade business for last 10 years, it already has a well established IT partners’ network spread across the nation.
Champion computers is also one of the handset partners for BSNL for feature phones, smartphones, tablets and datacards. Presently, it is importing these phones, with around 10 models in the market.
With its move into manufacturing, the company has set an ambitious target to become Rs 500 crore company by 2015.
