Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), made a notable change last month by ceasing to display titles with URLs in previews, citing an enhancement in aesthetics. Musk has now taken to X to confirm that the platform will reintroduce news headlines. In a post, Musk stated that an upcoming update will overlay the title in the upper portion of the image of a URL card, bringing back the visibility of news article headlines. Despite this, the headlines will still be overlaid on the image, maintaining the aesthetic change implemented in October that required users to click or tap on the URL card to view the title or read the headline.
This announcement comes amid a series of challenges for X, as major tech brands such as IBM, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros, Discovery, Paramount, and Comcast/NBCUniversal have either paused or pulled their advertising from the platform. The decision was attributed to Musk’s alleged endorsement of far-right viewpoints and support for posts promoting antisemitism. In response, Musk filed a lawsuit against left-leaning non-profit Media Matters, accusing the organization of interfering with contracts, business disparagement, and interference with prospective economic advantage.
A recent report claimed that X had placed ads for major brands, including Apple and IBM, next to content that promoted Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, leading to the pause of ads by several prominent tech brands. Despite the challenges, X’s CEO has expressed a commitment to truth and fairness on the social media platform.
