Fairphone has launched its latest smartphone, the Fairphone 5, with an astounding 10-year software support and an impressive 5-year warranty, surpassing even Samsung’s update policy. The device is constructed using 70% fair and recycled materials and is designed for easy repair using just a Philips screwdriver.
Fairphone’s aim is to ensure the longevity of the Fairphone 5. The smartphone comes with a 5-year warranty and software support that will extend until at least 2031. Beyond that, the company plans to continue updates for an additional two years, offering a total of a decade’s worth of software support. The phone ships with Android 13 and is slated to receive a minimum of 5 major OS updates.
The Fairphone 5 attributes its extended software update commitment to the Qualcomm QCM6490 processor, an industrial-grade chipset featuring a 6nm manufacturing process and Adreno 642L GPU. This processor, akin to the Snapdragon 778G, provides mid-range performance, a notable upgrade from the Fairphone 4’s Snapdragon 750G SoC.
In terms of specifications, the Fairphone 5 boasts a 6.46-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1,224 x 2,700px, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 880 nits. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The device is equipped with a 50MP IMX800 primary rear camera with optical image stabilization, a 50MP IMX858 ultrawide lens with autofocus, and a 50MP front camera for selfies and video calls.
The Fairphone 5 houses a substantial 4,200mAh battery with 30W charging support. Other notable features include Bluetooth 5.2, dual-SIM support via nano-SIM and eSIM, dual speakers, an IP55 rating for water and dust resistance, NFC, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.
The Fairphone 5 is available in a single configuration with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It is priced at €699 (~$756) in Europe and £619 (~$780) in the UK. The phone comes in Matte Black, Sky Blue, and a new Transparent edition.
