Google introduces earthquake alerts for Android users in India

Google has introduced its earthquake alert system for Android devices in India, using smartphone sensors like accelerometers to detect tremors.

Developed in consultation with the National Disaster Management Authority and the National Seismology Center, the system will send early earthquake alerts to Android users in affected areas, with notifications in local Indian languages.

Two types of alerts will be issued: “Be Aware” for MMI 3 & 4 shaking during a magnitude 4.5 or greater earthquake, and “Take Action” for MMI 5+ shaking during a quake of the same magnitude, which will include an audible alert and safety recommendations.
