Google’s plans to develop its own custom chips for its Pixel smartphones have reportedly been delayed until 2025, according to a recent report.
Initially, Google aimed to release its first fully customized chip, codenamed Redondo, in 2024, replacing the semi-custom chips it currently designs with Samsung.
However, the company has now decided to extend its partnership with Samsung for another year and introduce a fully custom chip, internally known as Laguna, in 2025.
This chip will serve as the brains for Google’s Pixel line of smartphones. Additionally, Google is expected to shift its chip manufacturing from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which is known for its advanced chip-making process.
The custom chips, named Tensor, were introduced by Google for the Pixel 6 series, with a focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities.
During our evaluation of the Pixel 7 Pro, we encountered heating problems with the device. Following a moderate gaming session and a 25-minute gameplay of Call of Duty: Mobile, the phone exhibited noticeable warmth and heating.
