Government has announced that the nationwide MNP (Mobile Number Portability) service will start from 31 March, 2015. The MNP service lets users shift the network provider all through the country without the need of altering their current mobile phone number. The new Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced that the new national MNP will start by March 31, 2015. He was speaking at Lok Sabha on Monday.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has a policy that adds additional entry fee, performance and financial bank guarantee from current MNP service providers. TRAI has given various reasons to DoT to not to make any changes in entry and bank guarantee fees of MNP services.
Currently MNP Interconnection Telecom Solution and Syniverse Technologies provide MNP service to telecom operators in the country. These two companies still have 5 more years of license with TRAI. TRAI has posted widespread reply to DoT on 21 July. Inter-ministerial panel Telecom Commission will consider review this reply.
TRAI has also said that MNP services and telecom operators need six months of time to make necessary technical changes in network to start national MNP services.
