IBM finally comes up with the game changing computer chip they were talking about for few months now.
IBM Corporation has showcased new chip on Thursday. This chip is as small as postal stamp and it is capable of handing out the data like human brain doe. It can handle inputs from multiple sources at the same time while processing the data.
Just three months ago, company had invested over $3 billion in chip research and development with a goal of innovating game changing computer chip to revolutionize the hardware unit of the company.
IBM’s new chip processes data in real time unlike other chips which operate on pre-written paths. Thus, this new chip can deal with ambiguity and consumes as low energy as hearing aid.
The chip consumes only 70mW energy. Samsung Electro-Machine’s 28nm process technology has been used to power this chip. Company has put over a decade of research in inventing this chip. The chip is aiming to bridge the gap between human brain’s power and existing computers.
Rajit Manohar, professor at Cornell Tech said, “We are one step close to building brain like computer. This has taken years of research with IBM.” The chip was designed at Cornell Tech.
The company said that the chip has one million neurones which can be programmed to behave like brain. The thermometer in chip scans, smells chemical signals and deliver result, help the search and even rescue people using robot during disaster.
If IBM succeeds in implementing this chip in mobile devices then it can power the mobile phones to handle multi sensory processing with future development in mobile industry. It can help in 3G integration, sensor and logic technologies and development in memory of mobile devices.
