Samsung’s first virtual reality wearable headset, Gear VR Innovator Edition, was launched ahead of IFA 2014 in Berlin. This headset is powered by Oculus technology and it offers a new way to experience and consume mobile content. Users are allowed to enjoy a cinematic virtual reality environment.
It has optical lens offering 96 degree field of view and it ahs a touch pad, back button and a volume key too. The headset runs with Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (connected via microUSB 1.1). The headset is equipped with accelerator, gyrometer, magnetic and proximity sensors. This headset also offers full 360 3D video which allows users to experience improved gaming. The headset is also allowed to use Note 4’s camera.
As claimed by Samsung, Gear VR is made with soft, flexible cushioning and lightweight materials, it’s very comfortable and completely wireless too. Samsung offers optimised virtual reality content including film, gaming, 360 degree video and educational content, from creators like Marvel, IMAX, DreamWorks VR and Vevo. JK Shin, president and CEO of IT & mobile communications division at Samsung, said, “The Samsung Gear VR goes far beyond expectations of how mobile technology can be used to consume content, and is a powerful representation of the progressive innovation of the Gear series. We are pleased to have partnered with Oculus VR to bring this incredibly immersive mobile content experience to consumers.”
John Carmack, CTO of Oculus, said, “We are thrilled to reveal the Gear VR Innovator Edition, a state-of-the-art mobile VR experience powered by Oculus. The deep technical partnership with Samsung has enabled us to create a virtual reality headset with world class resolution and performance, all on a completely mobile platform.” Samsung Gear VR will be available in frost white colour from this year-end. No details about its pricing or its date of availability have been announced by Samsung yet.
