Instagram is introducing generative AI image editing

Meta is fulfilling its commitment to integrate generative AI into all its products. During the Connect event, the company introduced new AI-based image editing and sticker creation features for Instagram.

One tool, “restyle,” functions as a potent generative AI filter, enabling users to transform their existing photos into various styles. Users can input descriptors like “watercolor” or more detailed prompts like “collage from magazines and newspapers with torn edges” to specify the desired image style.

Meta also previewed “backdrop,” a generative AI-driven green screen feature. Users can enter prompts like “place me in front of a breathtaking aurora borealis,” and the tool will apply the appropriate background to the image. The company did not specify the release date for restyle and backdrop but mentioned they would arrive “soon.”

Meta noted that posts created with these tools would be labeled to reduce the likelihood of viewers mistaking them for human-generated content. While the exact appearance of these labels wasn’t disclosed, Instagram has previously displayed information screens stating “image generated by Meta AI.”

Additionally, Meta showcased AI-generated stickers, which will be available on Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook Stories. This feature enables users to create custom stickers for their chats and Stories using text prompts. The stickers will gradually roll out to select English-language users of Meta’s apps over the next month.

These features align with Mark Zuckerberg’s commitment to integrating generative AI capabilities into all Meta-owned applications. The company also announced the introduction of over 25 generative AI chatbots, including personalities inspired by real-life celebrities and creators.
