Instagram is reportedly developing a new feature that enables users to deactivate read receipts in their Direct Messages (DMs). This option to turn off read notifications was unveiled by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his broadcast channel, although details regarding the feature’s public availability were not disclosed. However, Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, recently provided a preview of this upcoming toggle for read receipts.
The forthcoming read receipt toggle, as shared by Mosseri, appears to be located within Instagram’s ‘Privacy and Safety’ settings. This function will offer users the ability to read messages without indicating to the sender that the message has been seen, providing enhanced privacy and flexibility. The design of the settings menu seems to undergo a revamp based on Mosseri’s screenshot compared to the current version.
Meta’s WhatsApp service already provides a similar feature that allows users to prevent others from knowing when a message has been read. However, it appears that this functionality isn’t available in the tech giant’s Messenger application.
Over the recent months, Meta has introduced several new features to Instagram, including the capability to display music lyrics in Reels, an AI-based customizable friend, and a collaborative carousel attribute for sharing photos and videos in posts.
