The upcoming iOS 17.1 update from Apple is scheduled for a public release by October 24, as confirmed by the French regulatory body ANFR. This information was posted on the ANFR’s website in the context of Apple’s response to concerns about radiation levels in the iPhone 12.
Apple has committed to providing an update in France, as specified in the update, which is in French, stating, “This fix will be available to all users no later than October 24.”
The issue regarding radiation levels in the iPhone 12 arose when France ordered Apple to halt iPhone 12 sales and address the devices’ compliance with European electromagnetic radiation standards. The ANFR had found that the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of the iPhone 12 exceeded the European Union’s set limit at 5.74 watts per kilogram.
Apple, however, contested the findings, asserting that the ANFR had used a testing protocol that did not consider the off-body detection mechanism present in iPhones. This feature allows iPhones to enhance their transmit power when not in contact with the body to optimize cellular performance.
Apple maintained that this off-body detection feature had been internationally tested and verified as effective in meeting SAR requirements. Nevertheless, Apple agreed to disable this function on iPhones sold in France.
Apple emphasized that the iPhone 12 has always been safe for use. After the iOS 17.1 update, iPhone 12 models in France will no longer automatically increase transmit power when in the off-body state. This change might affect cellular performance in areas with weak signal coverage in specific use cases.
Apart from addressing this issue, the iOS 17.1 update brings various other enhancements to the iOS 17 operating system, including features like an Apple Music favorites system, support for internet-based AirDrop, improved Wallet app options for checking bank and card balances, and adjustments to the iPhone 15 Pro Action Button, among others. A comprehensive list of these changes can be found in our iOS 17.1 features guide.
