MediaTek has launched two new Kompanio chipsets for entry-level Chromebooks

When it comes to the selection of chips for entry-level Chromebooks, MediaTek is one of the major players. With the introduction of two of its brand-new chipsets, the MediaTek Kompanio 520 and MediaTek Kompanio 528, the business is now double down in this market.

Both of these new chipsets offer enhanced display support, better battery management, increased image capabilities, and various other features for Chromebooks. The Kompanio 520 and 528 chips from MediaTek have two ARM Cortex-A76 cores out of a total of eight cores. The 528 features a 2.2GHz clock speed, compared to 2.0GHz for the 520. Additionally, the chips have an improved dual-core GPU and an integrated APU to boost AI-powered performance.

As for the enhanced display support, the new MediaTek Kompanio 520 and Kompanio 528 support a Full HD+ display with a screen resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels and the addition of a second Full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Both processors support eMMC 5.1 storage and LPDDR4x RAM. Support for camera sensors up to 32 megapixels with 60 frames per second FHD video recording is available. Additionally, it includes HiFi-5 DSP for enhanced microphone processing. Both processors provide Wi-Fi 6 capability for connectivity.

The first Chromebooks powered by the Kompanio 520 and 528 will start to appear starting in Q1 of 2023, according to the company’s statement regarding availability.
