Instagram’s recently launched app, Threads, has gained significant popularity, amassing over 100 million users in just over five days. However, the app has not been made available in certain parts of Europe.
Instagram has provided an explanation for this delay, citing “upcoming regulatory uncertainty” as the reason. The European Union has introduced new guidelines under its Digital Markets Act (DMA), which impose strict rules on data handling and prevent companies like Meta from combining data collected from different apps.
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, alluded to these regulations, emphasizing the need for robust processes and technologies to ensure data privacy and compliance. The DMA aims to address concerns related to major online platforms and imposes specific criteria for identifying “gatekeepers.”
These gatekeepers are required to adhere to guidelines such as promoting third-party interoperability, granting access to generated data for business users, facilitating verification for advertising companies, and enabling business users to promote their offers beyond the gatekeeper’s platform.
Meanwhile, in other regions, Threads has experienced rapid growth, surpassing the milestone of 100 million users and becoming the fastest-growing app, outpacing ChatGPT’s achievement in reaching the same milestone.
