The announcement was made on Threads through Instagram’s official handle. Users can leverage generative AI to recreate or modify the background of an image directly within the Instagram app.
The accompanying video clip demonstrates how users can take any image from their phone and utilize prompts such as ‘chased by dinosaurs’ or ‘surrounded by puppies’ to alter the background for a Story. While the new AI backdrop tool is currently rolling out in the United States, it is expected to become available in other regions soon. Once the feature is accessible, a new “backdrop” button will appear at the top of the Instagram Story layout. Tapping on it activates the feature, allowing users to input a prompt to generate the background for an image.
After posting the story, a “Try it” sticker will be added to encourage other users to tap on it and experience the new feature for the first time. Instagram has been expanding its AI-driven offerings, including the recent addition of AI custom stickers, enabling users to create personalized stickers using AI and share them with friends and family.
