Microsoft introduces a fresh accessibility settings menu in Xbox Game Bar

Microsoft is further enhancing its commitment to accessibility in gaming, making it easier for players on both Xbox consoles and Windows PCs to enjoy a more inclusive gaming experience. Building on the success of its Xbox Adaptive Controller and recent controller-to-keyboard input mapping features, the company has introduced new accessibility options for the Xbox Game Bar and the Xbox App on PC.

In a recent announcement, Microsoft detailed its plans to roll out these accessibility features, starting with an app update on October 19. The Xbox Game Bar and Xbox App on PC will now include a dedicated “Game Accessibility” settings menu within the Xbox widgets. This update aims to simplify the process of customizing accessibility settings, providing players with more control over their gaming experience.

The accessibility options will cover both visual and audio-related settings, allowing gamers to tailor their experience to their specific preferences and needs. These enhancements reflect Microsoft’s commitment to making gaming more inclusive and accommodating for players of all abilities.

In addition to these software improvements, Microsoft has introduced an “Accessibility in Games” channel within the Xbox Store. This channel will highlight games that feature accessibility tags, making it easier for players to discover titles that accommodate their needs.

Furthermore, Microsoft has shared a “Playbook for Accessible Gaming Events,” designed to assist event organizers in making live gaming events more accessible to attendees with disabilities. Drawing from lessons learned at major gaming events like E3 and Gamescom, this guide offers valuable suggestions to enhance the accessibility of such gatherings.

Microsoft is not only focused on improving software accessibility but is also working to integrate accessibility features into its first-party games. For instance, Forza Motorsport now includes a “Blind Assist Feature” with audio cues to aid visually impaired drivers. The game Sea of Thieves also received audio cues to assist blind and low-vision players.

The commitment to accessibility extends to Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition, which features UI Narration, Strong Contrast Mode, and Text-to-speech/Speech-to-text communications. These enhancements align with Microsoft’s goal of creating a more inclusive gaming environment for all players.
