Microsoft’s President Brad Smith has stressed the necessity of human oversight and regulatory measures for artificial intelligence (AI) in an interview.
Speaking at the Business 20 Summit in New Delhi, Smith underscored the dual nature of technology, which can be both a tool and a weapon. He advocated for ensuring human control over AI, especially in critical areas like infrastructure automation. Comparing AI to electricity and transportation, Smith emphasized the need for legal and regulatory safeguards to ensure ethical AI use.
Smith also discussed the impact of AI on jobs, stating that AI is designed to complement human work, not replace it. He pointed out that AI-generated content can sometimes contain errors or misinformation, highlighting the importance of cross-checking and editing AI-generated material.
Smith’s perspective aligns with other tech leaders who have called for responsible AI development, including addressing potential risks and impacts on society. IBM’s Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna also recently emphasized that AI enhances human skills and productivity rather than replacing workers.
