Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s State Visit to the US next week will be an opportunity to elevate India-US commercial and strategic technology partnerships, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has said.
On June 22, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will extend a warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi as he arrives in Washington DC as a State Guest. The Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver a speech before a joint session of the US Congress on the same day. Additionally, President Biden and the First Lady will graciously host Modi at a State Dinner later in the evening.
Will be an opportunity to elevate our focus to commercial and strategic technology partnerships, including in defense, sending medical supply chain, clean energy and space.
Raimondo said in a recorded video speaking on the visit at the annual India Ideas Summit of the US-India Business Council.
Raimondo, a strong advocate for fostering closer ties between India and the United States, has emphasized the need to elevate this partnership to new heights during Modi’s state visit. She highlighted the immense potential for collaboration between India and the US in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G, quantum computing, and clean energy.
Prime Minister Modi’s address to a joint session of the US Congress will be a pivotal moment in the state visit. It offers an opportunity for him to outline India’s vision for the Indo-US technology partnership and emphasize the importance of collaboration in driving innovation and economic prosperity.
Apart from the address to Congress, PM Modi’s visit will also include bilateral meetings with President Joe Biden and other key leaders in the US administration. These discussions will likely focus on identifying specific areas of collaboration, such as trade and investment, technology transfer, and research and development initiatives.
According to Raimondo, the development and security of critical and emerging technology are the primary areas of focus for her and Union Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal. Stressing the significance of semiconductors in these efforts, Raimondo highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Minister Goyal and herself in March. She expressed that this agreement will foster closer collaboration between the two sides as they jointly address the pressing need to establish resilient and secure semiconductor supply chains.
