PowerSafe, the UPS brand of a company called Kunhar Peripherals, has launched a UPS powered by the sun. The product, Porta-Solar UPS, is a “portable solar lighting solution” priced at Rs. 5,000. The company says the product lets you charge three mobile phones, as well as power three CFL bulbs and one DC fan at the same time.
The Porta-Solar UPS weighs 3kg, which makes it fairly portable for a UPS. This product may appeal to those who head out on hiking trips in the wild, where they can charge their smart devices to better track their location and map routes. It will also interest those who face frequent power cuts in the summer. The product is compatible with photovoltaic (PV) modules to utilise solar power.
If there isn’t enough sunlight to charge the 70W Porta-Solar UPS, the company says its battery can be charged via AC power. In a statement, the company says, “Apart from the available external battery, there is an option to attach an additional battery.” The company claims that it can provide power backup for 6 to 7 hours, which should be enough for those who don’t have any backup power source.
With this UPS, PowerSafe is targeting gram panchayats, government offices in rural areas, hawkers, street vendors, small shops and micro-enterprises. Porta-Solar UPS has features such as overload protection in battery mode and short-circuit protection. The company claims that the UPS has a 3-step charging design that provides “extended battery life”.
