The latest rumors suggest that Qualcomm will be unveiling its new Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 and Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 chipsets at an upcoming event on March 17th. These chipsets are expected to be the latest additions to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 700 series, which are designed to offer mid-range performance at an affordable price point.
Although the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 did not see widespread adoption by OEMs, Qualcomm appears to be optimistic about the potential of its next-generation chipsets. While there are conflicting reports about which chipset will be launched at the event, some believe that it will be the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2. If this is the case, it will be the first mid-range SoC to feature a Cortex-X2 core.
Details about the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 are still scarce, but the chipset is expected to have 1 x ARM Cortex-X2 core clocked at 2.92 GHz, 3 x ARM Cortex-A710 cores at 2.5 GHz, and 4 x ARM Cortex-A510 cores clocked at up to 1.8 GHz. The GPU is an Adreno 725 with a 580 Hz clock speed, which is one step below the Snapdragon 730 on the 8 Gen 1 series. It remains to be seen whether the performance of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 will be similar to that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 series, but initial Geekbench scores suggest that it is superior to the MediaTek Dimensity 8200 and comparable to the Dimensity 9000.
Qualcomm will be hoping that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 will be a more popular choice for OEMs than its predecessor. Currently, there are only two rumored devices set to come with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2: the POCO X5 GT and the Realme GT Neo 5 Lite/SE. However, these chipsets could potentially be used in a wide range of mid-range smartphones in the future.
