Reports suggest that Samsung is in the process of developing three fresh camera sensors, with one of them potentially featuring an impressive 440MP resolution

Samsung introduced the 200MP camera within its Galaxy series through the S23 Ultra model. While the widespread adoption of this sensor across Samsung’s product lineup has yet to be realized, recent reports indicate that the company is taking its ambitions further in 2024 by developing three novel camera sensors, including one boasting a remarkable 440MP resolution.

Revealed by tipster Revegnus, the information suggests that Samsung is engaged in mass production of a new 50MP GN6 sensor, featuring a 1.6μm pixel size, as well as a 200MP HP7 sensor with a 0.6μm pixel size. However, the most intriguing sensor among these is the 440MP HU1, although specifics about its pixel size remain unconfirmed.

It is anticipated that all three sensors will enter mass production during the latter half of 2024. Nonetheless, Revegnus proposes that these sensors are unlikely to be integrated into Samsung’s own products.

Regarding the 50MP ISOCELL GN6 sensor, it appears to be a potential successor to the ISOCELL GN1 and ISOCELL GN2 camera sensors, offering a larger 1.6μm pixel size. This development could mark an improvement over the ISOCELL GN2’s pixel size of 1.4μm. The ISOCELL GN6 might emerge as Samsung’s premier 1-inch type camera sensor, comparable to Sony’s IMX989 sensor. Despite this, the tipster suggests it is improbable that Samsung smartphones will incorporate the GN6 sensor, indicating a higher likelihood of its adoption by Chinese manufacturers.

Originally intended for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the 200MP HP7 sensor was canceled due to its elevated production costs. However, Revegnus mentions the development of a 320MP sensor as well. This sensor could potentially find its place in the Galaxy S26 Ultra model. With chipsets such as MediaTek Dimensity 9200 already supporting 320MP cameras, and the forthcoming Snapdragon chip potentially following suit, it is plausible that 320MP sensors could become a significant trend in smartphones following the initial introduction of 200MP cameras.
