Users of Android smartphones with 2.2 and below versions are sincerely urged to upgrade their OS or the phone itself if they want to continue with Skype and its apps further.
Skype has issue an official announcement that all their version for older Android versions will be withdrawn soon and users have been asked to upgrade Skype. An email has been sent to Android 2.2 and below users that the change will take place in next few weeks.
The ongoing version of Google’s Android is 4.4 KitKat. Devices which were sold two years ago run on version 2.2 and most of the mobile manufacturers don’t allow updating the firmware after a limit – like version 2.2 could be updated to 2.3 only. Now the latest announcement from Skype means users having Android 2.2 devices will not be able to use Skype and its app anymore.
Skype wrote in the email, “We’ve noticed that you are, or previously were, signed into Skype on a phone running the Android 2.2 (or below) operating system. We’re sorry to inform you that we are now retiring all Skype apps that work on these older versions of the Android operating system. As a result, within the next few weeks, you’ll no longer be able to sign in and use Skype on any Android 2.2 (or below) phone. If possible, we recommend that you upgrade your phone to a newer version of Android to continue using Skype.” Three years ago Skype was acquire by Microsoft.
