Google has announced that it is cutting the price of the Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition.
The Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition is now available at $449 with a $200 price cut, down from the previous price tag of $649. It is now available at Google Play with the new price in select markets, including the US.
Google announced the news on Twitter and said, “Love big, beautiful screens? Save $200 on the 6.4-inch Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition.”
This is the first time Google has revised the price of its Google Play edition of Sony Xperia Z Ultra smartphone and is certainly an attempt to boost sales.
Notably, the Google Play editions of devices offer a ‘stock Android’ experience free of customisations and pre-loaded apps that usually come preloaded on devices by OEMs.
The Google Play edition of the Sony Z Ultra dropped the Xperia branding, but otherwise boasts of identical specifications as the Sony Xperia Z Ultra (Review). The device features a 6.4-inch full-HD (1080p) display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. The Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition runs Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box.
Like other devices on Google Play, the Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition is factory unlocked, which means you can put any carrier’s SIM in it.
Google in December added the Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition along with two new entrants in the form of Google Play edition LG G Pad 8.3 and a White variant of the Nexus 7 tablet.
Prior to this, Sony officially announced the Xperia Z Ultra, a smartphone-tablet hybrid, in June last year.
