Google has introduced its Search with Generative AI experiment in India, bringing forth certain features tailored specifically for the country. This new offering aims to simplify and enhance the search experience for users, incorporating advancements in generative AI technology.
Users who choose to participate in the experiment through Search Labs can access the feature via Chrome and the Google app, while the conventional Google native search will continue to operate as usual. The Search Generative Experience (SGE), previously launched in some markets, is now accessible in both English and Hindi for Indian users.
Puneesh Kumar, Google Search’s General Manager, described SGE as an evolution of search driven by Google’s advancements in generative AI. The integration of generative AI directly into Google search opens the door to entirely new types of questions and transforms how information is organized, making it more comprehensible and useful. This development is expected to be particularly beneficial for new Internet users who might feel overwhelmed by the vast amount of online information. Kumar emphasized that the objective is to help users understand topics more quickly, discover new perspectives, and accomplish tasks more effortlessly.
Ensuring the quality of information remains a paramount concern, Kumar stressed that any changes made to search are anchored in maintaining a high standard of quality to meet the expectations of billions of users who rely on Google. The new experience incorporates safeguards and prioritizes maintaining information quality while integrating generative AI.
The experiment will initiate with a more constrained approach, gradually evolving to become more fluid over time.
