Sundar Pichai cautions Google employees about upcoming workforce reductions

After terminating over 1,000 employees across various departments last week and cutting 100 positions at YouTube, Google CEO Sundar Pichai issued a memo to company staff warning of additional layoffs anticipated later this year.

In the memo reported by The Verge, Pichai emphasized that the company would need to make “tough choices” to achieve its ambitious goals. He acknowledged that the upcoming layoffs wouldn’t reach the scale of the previous year’s reductions, where 12,000 individuals, accounting for 6% of the workforce, were let go.

“These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team. But I know it’s very difficult to see colleagues and teams impacted,” Pichai communicated in an email to employees. “Many of these changes are already announced, though to be upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted.”

The recent Google layoffs affected various teams, including hardware, engineering, ads, and services, resulting in the dismissal of over 1,000 staff members. Concurrently, Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman confirmed their departure from the organization, as verified by TechCrunch.

A Google spokesperson responded to the YouTube layoffs, stating, “To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities. Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally.”
