After terminating over 1,000 employees across various departments last week and cutting 100 positions at YouTube, Google CEO Sundar Pichai issued a memo to company staff warning of additional layoffs anticipated later this year.
In the memo reported by The Verge, Pichai emphasized that the company would need to make “tough choices” to achieve its ambitious goals. “These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team. But I know it’s very difficult to see colleagues and teams impacted,” Pichai communicated in an email to employees. “Many of these changes are already announced, though to be upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted.”
