Tata Group is reportedly planning a substantial expansion of its iPhone casing manufacturing unit in Hosur, aiming to double its current size.
The existing unit, built with a Rs 5,000 crore investment across 500 acres, employs over 15,000 people. After the proposed expansion, it is expected to accommodate 25,000-28,000 employees.
Tata Electronics, a key player in contract manufacturing of high-end electronic items and accessories, is looking to significantly enhance its capabilities. The company recently acquired Wistron’s iPhone assembly plant.
While the new facility is likely to focus on Apple phone components, there’s also a possibility of catering to high-end phones from other companies. Apple’s decision to outsource iPhone enclosures to Tata Electronics is part of its strategy to diversify manufacturing beyond China.
Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized India’s significance, citing an all-time revenue record in the June-September quarter. Cook sees India as an exciting market with substantial growth potential, especially as more people move into the middle class.
A recent report by Counterpoint highlighted Apple’s strong performance in India during the June-September quarter, recording a 34% YoY growth, making it the best quarter for Apple’s shipments in the country, surpassing 2.5 million units.
