TCS is under investigation by the Maharashtra Labour Department for alleged coercive employee transfers

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is currently facing scrutiny from the Maharashtra State Government Labour Department following a formal complaint lodged by the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES). The complaint alleges that TCS has been engaging in the coercive transfer of over 2000 employees, prompting the labour department to issue a notice and summon TCS stakeholders for a formal meeting scheduled for January 18.

NITES, an organization that represents IT employees, asserts that it has received more than 300 complaints from individuals who claim that TCS has been systematically forcing them to relocate to different cities without adequate notice or consultation. Harpreet Saluja, the president of NITES, alleges that TCS utilized coercive tactics, threatening disciplinary actions against those who refused to comply with the transfer directives. Furthermore, there are allegations that the company has suspended the salaries of employees who voiced opposition to these forced transfers.

The core of the issue revolves around TCS sending emails to employees, notifying them of their transfers to various locations, including Mumbai. These emails cite vague business requirements without providing specific details. Employees are expected to report to their new assignments within a stringent two-week timeframe, with assurances of reimbursement at a later date.
