Tesla has released an update regarding its Optimus humanoid robot, previously known as Tesla Bot, along with a video that appears almost like CGI due to its impressive capabilities.
When Elon Musk initially introduced Optimus, it was met with skepticism by many, including some Tesla enthusiasts. The robot’s debut featured a dancer dressed as a robot, which didn’t help its credibility. Furthermore, the demonstration at Tesla AI Day last year left much to be desired.
During that time, Tesla had a very rudimentary prototype that lacked sophistication. Its movements were limited to basic walking and waving. However, the project gained more credibility after Tesla showcased several advanced prototypes at its 2023 shareholders’ meeting earlier this year.
Tesla has now provided a new update on Optimus, highlighting the robot’s ability to autonomously sort objects. This update also mentions that Tesla is training Optimus using neural networks end-to-end, similar to the approach taken with Full Self-Driving technology.
The video demonstrates the progress Tesla has made with Optimus, showcasing a more refined robot. The mechanical stability has improved, with a prototype even balancing on one foot, although the video is so impressive that it almost appears computer-generated. Nonetheless, it suggests that Tesla indeed has working prototypes within its facilities.
In a previous update on Optimus, Elon Musk expressed that the potential of the project is highly underestimated. He mentioned that demand for Optimus could reach as high as 10 to 20 billion units and confidently predicted that Optimus would be a significant contributor to Tesla’s long-term value.
While there isn’t a specific timeline for bringing Optimus to the market, Tesla is expected to first deploy it in its own operations.
