As part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Union ministry of education plans to introduce a ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ system, named ‘Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR),’ for all students from pre-primary to higher education, alongside their existing 12-digit Aadhaar ID, subject to parental consent.
The APAAR ID, referred to as an Education Ecosystem Registry or edulocker, is intended to serve as a lifelong identification number, enabling the tracking of students’ academic journeys and achievements.
The ministry of education has instructed all states and union territories to initiate the process of creating APAAR IDs for school students.
The data captured on the Aadhaar ID will form the basis for generating the APAAR ID.
While parental consent is required for this system, the government has assured that the data will remain confidential and only be shared with government agencies when necessary, and parents can withdraw their consent at any time.
After obtaining parental consent, schools will be responsible for uploading the information onto the central Unified District and Information System For Education Plus (UDISE+) portal.
