Reddit’s recent decision to change its API access has led to the shutdown of the popular Apollo app. The developer of Apollo, Christian Selig, announced that the app will cease operations on June 30th.
Selig explained the reasons for the shutdown in a post on Reddit, highlighting issues with the API changes and Reddit’s treatment of developers. One of the main concerns is the cost associated with the new API, which would amount to $20 million per year for apps like Apollo.
Additionally, Reddit’s decision to block ads in third-party apps, while still profiting from ads in its official app, has raised questions about the company’s motives. The removal of sexually explicit content from third-party apps, despite its presence in the official app, has also caused frustration. Selig emphasized the financial burden and unaffordability of continuing Apollo due to the API changes and costs involved.
