The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has teamed up with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) to develop a touchless biometric capture system. This collaboration aims to create a system that offers seamless access to fingerprint authentication from the comfort of home, similar to facial authentication.

This new system will be a useful addition to the current tools available in the Aadhaar ecosystem. The memorandum of understanding signed between UIDAI and IIT-Bombay will facilitate the creation of a biometric capture system that can be deployed in any location and is user-friendly. The project’s ultimate goal is to provide effortless accessibility to the Indian public while also enhancing security and privacy.
Joint Research for Biometric Capture System
The UIDAI has partnered with the IIT-Bombay to develop a new mobile capture system for fingerprints that integrates a liveness model. This system will capture multiple fingerprints simultaneously, increasing the authentication success rates. To achieve this, signal/image processing and machine learning/deep learning techniques will be used, utilizing the common mobile phone accessible to most citizens.
NCETIS Leading R&D Efforts Making Universal Authenticator a Reality
The National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security (NCETIS), a joint initiative by IIT Bombay and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), will be responsible for leading the research and development efforts for this system. They will work on developing technology solutions for electronic system design and manufacturing to meet the specific needs of India’s internal security forces. This touchless biometric capture system will provide a valuable addition to the existing facilities available in the Aadhaar ecosystem, allowing for effortless accessibility from the comfort of one’s own home.

The Universal Authenticator is inching closer to becoming a reality, thanks to the upcoming touchless biometric capture system that the UIDAI and IIT Bombay are developing. This system is set to be a valuable addition to the Aadhaar ecosystem, and the collaboration between the two organizations aims to create a user-friendly system that is both secure and accessible. UIDAI has been working hard to introduce new features and technologies to enhance the security of Aadhaar, such as the AI-based security mechanism launched in February.
