WhatsApp is reportedly working on enhancing its file-sharing capabilities by introducing a new feature that allows users to share files with nearby individuals on the Android platform. This development comes as part of the beta update, version 2.24.2.20, released through the Google Play Beta Program. Alongside the upcoming nearby file-sharing feature, the beta update also includes a fix for a camera bug within the application.
According to reports from WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the new file-sharing feature, akin to Apple’s AirDrop, is currently in development and is expected to be available in a future update of the app. While the feature is not yet ready for beta testing, a preview shared by WABetaInfo reveals that the in-development feature will include an option titled “Share files with people nearby.” The screenshot further displays a list of nearby users and a setting allowing users to configure their visibility.
The feature also enables users to set their visibility to nearby users without revealing their phone numbers to non-contacts. When users wish to share files, they must wait for nearby users to accept their request. Additionally, nearby users can open WhatsApp and shake their devices to view incoming share requests. It is essential to note that the nearby file-sharing feature will maintain end-to-end encryption to uphold user privacy.
WhatsApp’s efforts to enhance file-sharing capabilities align with its previous updates, such as the introduction of HD photo sharing for all users in the preceding year. The nearby file-sharing feature, once fully developed and released, aims to streamline the file-sharing experience on the platform, providing users with a convenient and efficient method to share files with others in close proximity.
While the specific release date for the nearby file-sharing feature remains undisclosed, the beta update signals the ongoing commitment of WhatsApp, owned by Meta, to improve and innovate its messaging platform. As the development progresses, users can anticipate a more seamless and versatile file-sharing experience on WhatsApp, enhancing the overall user experience.
