WhatsApp is getting ready for EU law with third-party chats while Apple resists, according to reports

WhatsApp is reportedly preparing to comply with European law on messaging interoperability by introducing a new feature called “Third-Party Chats.”

This comes in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a European Union law aimed at tech giants to facilitate competition from startups.

The DMA requires dominant messaging apps with at least 45 million active users in EU countries to offer messaging interoperability, allowing users of different messaging apps to exchange messages seamlessly.

While WhatsApp is preparing for compliance, Apple is resisting similar requirements for iMessage, claiming it doesn’t have enough European users to be subject to the law’s provisions. The EU is investigating Apple’s claim, which hinges on usage statistics.
