WhatsApp has been consistently introducing new security and privacy features in recent times, and it seems they are now working on another feature that could simplify account verification for users. According to WAbetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp updates, the messaging platform might soon allow users to utilize their email addresses as an alternative method for logging in.
Currently, when users log into their WhatsApp accounts on a new device, they are required to input their phone numbers and receive a verification code through SMS or a phone call. However, this method can be inconvenient or impractical in certain situations, such as when users lose their phones or SIM cards, or if there are network or server issues preventing the delivery of SMS messages. Allowing users to employ their email addresses instead of phone numbers for verification could provide a more flexible option.
The email verification feature is reportedly in development and is said to be optional. WhatsApp beta testers using version v2.23.16.15 of the app noticed this feature. Although users can already provide an email address when setting up a PIN for two-step verification, which enhances account security, this would mark the first time email is used for login purposes.
The addition of email verification could enhance WhatsApp’s array of security and privacy tools, which currently encompass end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, and biometric authentication. Furthermore, this feature might simplify device switching or account recovery for users who do not wish to rely solely on their phone numbers. Nevertheless, specific details about when and how this feature will be implemented for all users remain unclear.
